¿TENEMOS UNA ADICCIÓN A NUESTROS SMARTPHONES O TELÉFONOS CELULARES?  ¿NOS AYUDAN O NOS CONTROLAN?

Todos tenemos teléfonos móviles y los usamos con frecuencia, pero ¿es esta tecnología una bendición o una maldición?  En el colegio, ¿hablamos cara a cara con los amigos, o tenemos la nariz metida en el móvil al salir del salón de clase?  En la casa, tenemos conversaciones con la familia durante la cena o estamos todos usando el móvil para comunicarnos con amigos y conocidos o simplemente para jugar?

Aquí en Darién, los estudiantes traen sus móviles a las clases. Si los profesores dejamos de ser entretenidos en los ojos de los estudiantes por tres o cuatro minutos, están enviando mensajes de texto solapadamente o revisando sus mensajes en el móvil. La capacidad de concentración ha bajado a un nivel alarmante.

A todos nos encanta la tecnología que tenemos. Sin embargo, ¿hemos llegado al punto de ser esclavos con una adicción a los móviles?  ¿Han empeorado las relaciones entre amigos y familias? ¿Hablamos con amigos en el colegio, o estamos a cada instante utilizando los móviles? ¿Ya no podemos concentrar en el trabajo que tenemos que hacer, gracias al hermoso entretenimiento que nos ofrece el Smartphone?  Muchos juran que no pueden vivir la vida sin el teléfono celular. ¿Qué opinan ustedes?  Por favor, escriban sus comentarios.

Have Smartphones been a blessing or a curse?

We all have Smartphones and are thoroughly appreciative of the conveniences this technology offers us. I, the antediluvian teacher of the classes in Darien, have a Smartphone, an iPad, a notebook PC, and a large iMac – and I am delighted with all these fine tools.  When I arise in the morning, I check my email. When I am traveling, I use my iPad to check driving directions. The devices we have today enable us to do things we were formerly unable to do.

On the other hand, I have limited understanding of people whose trips to the grocery market and the post office are made during non-stop phone conversations. I do not understand those who text or surf during meetings or students who slyly text or use their phones in as surreptitious a fashion as possible during class. I do not understand why students must tote their phones through the hallways and place them on their desks when they reach class. Whereas I once saw my wonderful students talking and laughing with one another between classes, I now more frequently see them scurrying along with their phones before their eyes. We have all seen families dining out in restaurants with not one word of shared conversation, and each engrossed in some Smartphone pursuit. Have we become human mobile devices?  Have we lost some interpersonal skills through non-stop use of cellphones?  Are we no longer able to concentrate on tasks we are assigned, due to the fabulously entertaining competition which mobile devices place in our hands?

Darien High School students send a special greeting to our wonderful friends in Chiapas, México.

Cada país y cada región tiene su propio sistema educativo. El pueblo de Darien está ubicado en el estado de Connecticut — un nombre indígena que quiere decir río largo con muchos árboles — en el noreste de los Estados Unidos. Nuestro nombre viene originalmente de la selva tropical de Darién, Panamá, donde tenemos muchos amigos. Vamos a escribir algo sobre el sistema educativo….sobre lo que se estudia en la escuela….sobre la rutina diaria y las costumbres que observamos. ¿Qué hacen los estudiantes, típicamente?  ¿Cómo son los profesores y qué hacen (educar, instruir, enseñar, guiar, apoyar, etc.)?

Each country — and, in the United States — each individual state has its own educational system, with its own practices, perspectives, requirements, guidelines, and expectations. Can we describe our own educational system? What does the typical student do every day? Why do we attend school — for pragmatic reasons, related to advancement of concrete personal goals…….or for expanding our horizons, gaining enhanced appreciation of a wide variety of disciplines and attributes which will embellish and beautify our lives throughout a lifetime of learning?

How do our educational systems vary from country to country?  Let us celebrate the differences and simularities as we learn from one another just what our responses are to the educational practices inherent in our own cultures.
