DARIEN HIGH SCHOOL
¡BIENVENIDOS, AMIGOS!
Nos gustaría presentarnos. Al ver los comentarios publicados por estudiantes del Colegio Secundario Darién, podrán llegar a conocernos individualmente. En cuanto a nuestro pueblo, Darién está ubicado en el estado de Connecticut (un nombre indígena que se refiere a un río largo, con muchos árboles grandes en las orillas). Darién, cuyo nombre supuestamente viene de la Provincia de Darién, Panamá, tiene una población de 22.000. Hay cinco escuelas primarias (para niños de 5 hasta 10 años de edad), un colegio intermedio (para los de 11 a 14 años), y un colegio secundario. Darién está cerca del océano Atlántico, al noreste de la Ciudad de Nueva York.

Hola! Yo soy Isabelle Johnsen. Yo tengo dieciocho años y voy a Darien High School en Darien, Connecticut. Yo tengo dos hermanas. Ellas se llaman Lilly y Grace. Durante los fines de semana, me gusta pasar el rato con mis amigos, pintar, o mirar Netflix. Ahora, yo estoy mirando “The Office”. Yo no estoy atlética, pero en el pasado yo jugaba al fútbol y montaba a caballo. Mis clases favoritas son almuerzo, arte, y el periodo libre. A veces me gusta la clase de neurología o inglés pero no cuando esas clases tienen mucha tarea o dan pruebas difíciles. Mi color favorita es el rosado. Mi cuarto entero es rosado por que yo lo decoré a la edad de once años. Ahora, me parece que el cuarto es un poco demasiado rosado.
Más importante, mis comidas favoritas son las papas fritas y alitas de pollo. No son muy saludables, pero muy, muy deliciosas. Mi postre favorito es marshmallows (malvaviscos) o realmente cualquier cosa con azúcar es bastante bueno. Mi cumpleano es el tres de octubre. Hace seis días cumplí los dieciocho años. Para mi cumpleaños, mi madre hizo una fiesta de sorpresa con todos mis amigos. Yo me quedé bien sorprendida, y la fiesta estuvo muy divertida.

Me llamo Kenny Yamaguchi, y vivo en Darién, Connecticut. Soy estudiante de Darién High School, o DHS. Yo corro con mi equipo para “Cross Country” en el otoño. También yo paso tiempo con mis amigos y a mí me gusta escuchar la música rock en mi tiempo libre. A mí me encanta mirar y jugar todos los deportes, especialmente el fútbol. Mis atletas favoritos son Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero, Angel Di Maria, Alexis Sánchez, y otras personas. A mi me gusta visitar a mis hermanos porque la ciudad de Nueva York es muy grande, y pues a mi me encanta explorar la ciudad con mis hermanos.
A mí me gusta mirar películas con mi familia y mis amigos. Mis películas favoritas incluyen“The Departed, Inception, y Interstellar”. Mis actores favoritas son Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, y Jonah Hill porque ellos son actores profesionales pero son personas simpáticas para tomar fotos y hablar con otras personas también.

The last year of high school for me has also been stressful, going to college is a lot of work! What type of classes do you take? And also, where is Comitan de Dominguez Chiapas? My city is very small and all of the people are very similar. The people in Darien play a lot of sports, but I do not play that many.

Lacrosse is a very fun sport with lots of physical contact. There are 12 players per team on the field (including the goalie) and each has a lacrosse stick in which you catch and throw the ball with. The objective of the game is to score more goals than the other team in your opponent’s net.
I used to play volleyball for two years and it was a lot of fun! But I had to quit because I had too much schoolwork.
It is awesome that you want to be a Forensic Chemist. That sounds so interesting to me even though chemistry was never my favorite subject. I love forensic work, but only know information about it from shows like Law and Order (which happens to be one of my favorites). Have you ever watched this TV show?
Special traditions of mine usually revolve around holidays, many of which I am sure we have in common. However, one that is coming up is Halloween on October 31st. On this day we dress up in costumes and go around to different houses «trick-or-treating» (getting candy). I believe on this day you celebrate the Day of the Dead. Can you tell me more about this holiday?
I do have an Instagram. It is my favorite social media app and I post a lot of pictures!

Hi Carlos!! I´m Paola. I´m a student at ITAES i am 13 years old, I’m the middle sister. I have a little sister of11 years old, and an older brother he is 15 years old. My sister is in my school and my brother is now studying in Indiana.
I love the theater and the cinema too! I don´t have a job yet but I help my mom making cakes and I love taking pictures and they pay me for it.On my free time I like dancing, eating ,playing tennis and playing FIFA.
I know how to drive but obviously I don´t have a car yet; I love the animals, that’s why I have 6 dogs and I love them. My favorite magazine is Wildlife Heroes.
Here we don´t celebrate thanksgiving, but in November we celebrate the day of the death, we are the only country that celebrates that but I love it!
In Christmas day we celebrate with all my family. My favorite vacations were on Texas we stayed there for 3 weeks. I love the cultural places.
I would like to go to Greece and Prague in the future, and I want to study university. I want to be a criminologist more than like I would love it!!

Hey Paola. The day of the dead sounds pretty fun, we have Halloween on the 31st of October but it is more of a «Hallmark» holiday than a traditional one nowadays. It used to be the eve before All Saints Day, but very few people I know celebrate All Saints Day anymore. I don’t have an IG, I’m not a big fan of social media, but I do play FIFA. I like video games and computers a lot., I’ve even built my own computer once. Is your brother going to boarding school in Indiana? That is a long journey just to go to high school. Also, do you guys learn American History in school? We learn about Mexico and South America in Middle School, but we don’t come back to it after.

I love dancing so I go to dance classes every single day!.
My favorite vacation were in 2014 when I went to England, I went to Oxford, Bath, Stonehenge, Winchester and London so I really learned a lot about those places.
Of all those cities my favorite was London because I really liked the cold weather and all the people were so nice there. If I’d live in London I would go to the O2 arena to watch my favorite band and I’d go to Leicester square and to Oxford Street every weekend.

Hi Ximena! London is also one of my favorite cities, and I went there about 5 years ago to visit one of my old neighbors. I saw the O2 arena and it was one of the coolest arenas I have ever been to. It is huge! I have one brother, who is 21 years old, and a sister who is 18 years old. She is currently doing a semester abroad in Turkey, despite all the chaos that is going on in there. My brother works in New York City, and I really like to visit him.

También tengo una familia muy Italiana y grande. En escuela, mi clase favorita es la clase de ciencias porque para mi es muy interesante. Estoy en un equipo de remo en un río muy cerca de Darien. Para mi, una cena perfecta es cuando mi mamá prepara platos tradicionales de Italia. ¡Especialmente cuando un tipo de pasta es involucrado! In my free time I go to the central park with my friends. I also want to go to Rome but I wouldn´t like to go to Paris, I think the Eiffel tower is boring.

In the future I want to be a movie producer because I love the idea creating movies, I want to travel to New York or Hollywood because for my career I would love to work in these places.
When I have Problems, I like being in green areas or in spacious places, because I solve my problems when I am alone. If you like solving problems, probably you will be a good psychologist!

Thanks for responding! What is your dog’s name? I have a Yellow Labrador Retriever named Gracie. We got her for Christmas 4 years ago. Chocolate is delicious but I’ve never had chamoy. I may have to find a way to try it because it sounds very good.
I know friends who want to be movie producers and directors, and they are really good. I’m sure you are equally as talented.
I live near New York and am only a 1 hour train ride away. It is a really cool city and worth visiting.
I am usually not a fan of horror movies. I would rather watch a comedy or action movie. But I have watched a couple. Which one is your favorite horror film?

Mi lugar favorito para esquiar son las montañas de Rocky, especialmente Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Yo soy voluntaria con una organización médica de emergencia que se llama Post 53. Yo trabajo con Post 53 cinco o seis días de la semana. Yo estoy un “EMT” y conductora de una ambulancia. Yo quiero llegar a ser médica.

Thank you for writing back to me! How old is your sister? I have always wished I had a sister, but I do love being the only girl with three brothers. I love to Travel, but I’ve never been to Mexico before. I hope to go there soon. What are you favorite things to do and favorite places to go there? «Black Ice» seems like a very interesting book. I will have to read it before I go to Jackson Hole in December. It is one of my favorite places and I have been going there every Christmas since I was three years old. It is very beautiful and peaceful in the mountains. Wyoming is not a very populated state in the United States. They have more elk than people in Wyoming! They also have wolves, moose, bison, and mountain lions there. I have never seen a mountain lion while I have been there, but I did see a wolf once which is very rare. Do you ski? If so I highly suggest you come to Jackson Hole because it has incredible skiing. What is ITAES? Could you tell me more about it? I have never heard of it here in the United States. I also play basketball, but just with my brothers and friends , but not for the school team. It is a very fun sport.

«Pan compuesto» sounds delicious. My favorite regional dish would have to be New England Clam Chowder. It is a soup that has clams, carrots, potatoes, and it is so delicious!

My name is Stephanie and I’m 15 years old. You have lived in many different parts of the world and I think that’s awesome! I don’t like football as much as you do, but I don’t hate it.
My school’s name is ITAES, which is located, in Comitán de Domínguez (a small town in the south of Mexico). I used to live in the Center of Mexico but I moved here because of my dad’s job. I also used to practice ice skating. Now I just go to the gym because there’s no ice rink here. I practiced ice skating during 3 years and I consider that I did a great job during that period. I attended to 2 tournaments and I won 2nd and 3rd place in nationals but I moved to Chiapas, so I quit practicing ice skating. I would like to practice football but my mom says it’s for ‘tomboys’, so I’m still looking for other sport that satisfies me as much as ice skating does.
Hope you can go to every Football game of your favorite team as your grandpa did.

It’s interesting to know about the career you want to study because, guess what? … I want to study foreign affairs as well!
I can see that you like to travel a lot, and I like it, too. Tell me more about those countries you’ve visited. Which one is your favorite culture? I don’t have a favorite one but for the moment, I’m studying French and it would be awesome for me if I went on exchange to France just when I finish high school.
All that stuff about your clubs sounds really interesting. Tell me what you do in the clubs, or how you got to do this. Here we don’t have a lot of things like that, but anyways, as long as I keep on knowing more about other cultures I’ll be fine.
My favorite activities are studying languages or things related to literature. Actually, I like to write novels and, I have a couple of books that I wrote on my own. In my spare time I teach English in the same school that I’m attending. I love charity too and I often visit the jail so that I can help the prisoners. Tell me about your activities too.

That’s awesome that you want to study foreign affairs as well. My interest in travel and in politics has directly influenced what I want to do. I’ve been to Cancun, London, Vienna, Salzburg, Prague, Berlin, Munich, and Hawaii. Of those, my favorite location would have to be Vienna. It’s an absolutely gorgeous city, it like stepping into the 19th century. When I was there for an international conference on leadership, we went to all the key sites, toured the OSCE, and went to a live concert where they placed traditional Austrian pieces like ‘Wein bleibt Wein’ and ‘Die Zauberflöte.’ The only downside was when I almost got robbed but I got away. Prague was incredible too, but we only had a day there. In Berlin we saw the Berlin Wall, went to see the Reichstag, an old cathedral established by a Holy Roman Emperor, and walked around the city. Much of the architecture was new or Soviet era, only 10% of the old city remained after the Soviet Union captured Berlin in 1945. But what does remain is stunning. Unfortunately, I’ve never been to France and the only French word I know is «Boujour,» but I would love to visit some day and learn a bit of the language. What places have you been to or wish to go to?
Essentially, Model Congress is a simulation of U.S. policy-making. We debate issues and vote on whether or not to enact the bill being presented, which is on everything from foreign policy (my personal favorite) to animal rights. I was elected President last year and we actually have a conference in New York City this Saturday. Model United Nations is a simulation of how the United Nations operate to solve world solutions which range from nuclear disarmament to women’s rights.
I like to read and write as well! You must be much more focused than I am, I’ve actually never finished a novel before but I hope to in the future. Unfortunately, I have not been able to do either or those too much lately due to school work and stress before college. But the school’s literary magazine (which I am apart of) has started a collaborative novel so I’m hoping that will help me write something. And that is really cool that you teach English and help prisoners! Please tell me more about that.

Me llamo Riley pero mis amigos dicen “Riles” la mayoría del tiempo, porque Riles suena mejor y tiene solamente una sílaba. Es el nombre de mi bisabuelo de la familia de mi padre. En los Estados Unidos, Riley es un nombre femenino y masculino. Por eso razón, me gusta “Riles” porque es más masculino y muy único.
Yo juego al hockey sobre hielo y es mi deporte favorito. Yo empecé a jugar al hockey antes de que yo puedo recordar porque mi padre ha jugado toda su vida y el lo ama. Yo no sé si ustedes conocen cómo se juega el hockey. El juego es muy único en los principales y es muy difícil para explicar especialmente en breve. Los básicos son tu juegas con un palo y un disco en un gran plataforma de hielo. Cuando yo era muy pequeño, me despertaba a las cinco y media para mis partidos. Ahora, yo participo en el equipo de Darien High School y hemos tenido éxito en los años pasados. Nosotros ganamos el campeonato del estado de Connecticut, una hazaña que un equipo de hockey en Darién no había hecho en cincuenta años. El juego no es muy popular en los países latinos. Yo pienso esto es porque el clima de paises latinoamericanos estan muy caliente y porque el deporte originó en países muy mas norte. ¡Hola! Soy Madison y soy parte de la clase de español periodo 4 de Darien. Un poco de mi, tengo diecisiete años y este es mi año final de escuela secundaria. Soy parte de una familia muy grande de cuatro hermanos, una hermana y tres perros. He sido parte de un club prestigioso que se llama Theater 308 desde mi primer año aquí. He participado en cada producción que hemos tenido. Soy una líder del club y a mí me encanta.
También en mi tiempo libre, practico con un estudio de vocales. Los otros chicos y yo cantamos en iglesias y en hogares de personas antiguas ocasionalmente. En adición, tenemos recitales cada estación. Este año, porque es mi último año con el estudio, tengo un recital especial sólo de yo y estoy muy emocionada.
Otra actividad que yo hago, ofrezco tiempo en el hospital de aquí. Yo paso tiempo con los otros voluntarios un día de cada semana y recibimos a los visitantes en el frente del hospital. Por los dos veranos pasados, he viajado a dos países como España y Italia y tomé clases por la duración de mi tiempo allá. Quiero visitar más lugares con cultures diferentes en el futuro. Este verano, planeo visitar Francia y estoy muy emocionada para aprender allí. Like you, I have an older brother who is in college and is 19 years old. He goes to school in Maryland (which is very close to Washington DC, which is our nation’s capital). He is studying criminology and loves it there.
Unlike you, I have lived in one town (Darien, which is in Connecticut, a state on the Eastern Coast of the US and is close to New York City) my whole life, but I think its awesome that you have moved a little bit. However, my mother moves all over the country so I get to see new places when I visit with her. What is your favorite place to visit?
One of my favorite things is to watch movies in my free time. I’ve only ever watched one movie that wasn’t in English and that had subtitles, so I can’t even imagine how hard it would be to watch lots of movies in a different language. Even though it wasn’t in English, I really enjoyed hearing a different language and still being able to understand the story.

Soy un niño explorador de EEUU por once años. Vamos a acampadas y aprendemos destrezas que tienen que ver con el medio ambiente, tal como empezamos fuegos. Exploradores me hacer en una persona que más contribuye en mi comunidad.
He estado en Orquesta de escuela desde tercer grado. Toco violoncelo, y a mi me gusta escribir música y escuchar música.
Paso mi tiempo libre con carpintería y dibujo. Yo creo gafas de sol de madera y un reloj con una pintura en la cara del reloj, y les di el reloj a mis padres para la Navidad. ¡Hola amigos! Me llamo Ewan y yo vivo en Darien Connecticut en los Estados Unidos. Hay muchas cosas para hacer en Darien, pero muchos que me interesan están fuera de Darien. Mi actividad favorita para hacer es que hacer snowboarding. Todos los fines de semana en el invierno, mis amigos y yo vamos a Vermont, otro estado de los Estados Unidos para hacer el snowboard. Es una actividad muy divertida. Necesitamos manejar en el carro por 4 horas a las 4 de la mañana para ir a Vermont. No dormimos mucho pero vale la pena. Hay muchas montañas en Vermont y mucha nieve para hacer snowboard. Tenemos muchos amigos en Vermont y nos gusta pasar tiempo en la montaña con ellos. Hacer el snowboard es muy divertido porque induce mucha adrenalina. Nos encanta ir muy rápido bajando la montaña. ¡Les invitamos a ustedes a hacer el snowboard con nosotros!

Disfruto mirando películas y la televisión, y jugando los videojuegos. Yo juego algunos deportes, como Squash y Rugby, pero es casual y no soy muy bueno. Yo participo en muchas organizaciones después de la escuela como trabajo comunitario y los deportes. Por ejemplo, yo ayudo a los niños de escuela primaria con sus tareas en el pueblo de Norwalk porque ellos no tienen una educación tan avanzada como Darién. Otra organización en que yo participo en es «Unite For Africa» o «Unir Para África.» Yo soy presidente de este grupo y nosotros recaudamos fondos y difundimos la educación para las personas muy pobres en Tanzania. También yo corro en la primavera con el equipo de pista y campo. Yo tengo una vida muy ocupada pero muy divertida y gratificante.

No soy grande en los deportes en mi escuela pero me gusta jugar basquetbol con mis amigos afuera de la escuela.
Darién está muy cerca de la ciudad de Nueva York y las costumbres de la gran ciudad afectan a la gente de Darién también. Los monumentos históricos de Nueva York son increíbles y ofrecen muchas opciones para aprender sobre las culturas. Darién es una comunidad que tiene características únicas y diversas culturas de los Estados Unidos en general. A mi me interesan los monumentos y me hago tiempo para apreciarlos. También, me gustan las películas y los videojuegos y una buena película que vi el otro dia fue “The Martian” y a mi me gustó mucho porque es sobre el espacio y es cómico. A mi me gusta el medio ambiente de Darién en general porque tiene mucha energía positiva y estoy en un pueblo de los mejores amigos.

Ahora, tengo 18 años y estoy en el grado 12 en la Escuela Secundaria de Darién. A mí me gusta jugar al lacrosse y el juego “Leap Freeze” en mi tiempo libre. También, yo participo en un club de “Challenger Béisbol.” En este club, yo ayudo a enseñar béisbol a niños con necesidades especiales.

Hola! Yo soy Carey Hocker. Yo tengo dieciséis años y asisto al colegio de Darien High. Hago mucho en mi escuela. Juego fútbol y atletismo y también participo en muchos clubes de los estudiantes cómo “Unite for Africa” y “Save the Children”. Estoy en mi año final de DHS y entonces, estoy aplicando a universidades. Ahora, estoy estudiando física, cálculo, y gobierno, pero en la Universidad quiero estudiar comunicaciones de media y español. Estoy tan emocionada para la Universidad, pero definitivamente, voy a echar de menos a mis hermanos. Tengo dos hermanas y un hermano y todos son muy atléticos. Se llaman Caitlyn, Ryan, y Chloe. Soy la mayor de todos y esto es mucha responsabilidad, pero también es divertido.
Me encantaría viajar sobre el mundo cuando termine la Universidad. Probablemente, voy a estudiar en países diferentes durante mi experiencia universitaria. Viajar me interesa porque quiero saber más sobre la pobreza que existe en muchos países. También, me encanta aprender sobre culturas diferentes. Específicamente, espero viajar a Italia y España.

Todos los veranos yo voy de vacaciones con mi familia a unos lugares diferentes todos los años. Unos años nosotros fuimos a los bancos externos pero otros años el sitio es una sorpresa. Los deportes son muy importantes en mi vida. Baloncesto es mi deporte favorito. A mi me encanta jugar y mirar partidos de baloncesto con mi familia o con mis amigos. También a mi me gusta mirar fútbol norteamericano y béisbol. Yo soy estudiante de la escuela secundaria de Darien. Yo fui a la China como parte del programa de intercambio en mi escuela. También yo soy fundador de un club en mi escuela. El club se llama “Cinematic Analysis” o Análisis Cinemático en español. A mi me encanta este club porque yo tengo la oportunidad para mirar las películas con amigos buenos.

I really like hanging out with my friends as well. However, here in the United States, drinking is frowned upon and we are not allowed to drink beer or alcohol until we are 21 years old. Instead, my friends and I hang around watching TV, playing sports, or playing video games. Lots of my friends are into long boarding as well! I have never been to Argentina, but would really like to come sometime. I am really glad that you like music because I do too. Music is very big here and everyone always hangs out and listens to it. Do you have a favorite artist? How about sports; is there one in particular that you really like? My favorite sport is ice hockey. I love to play, but I also love to watch it on TV. What else do you like to do in your free time It’s really cool that you want to study industrial design! Can you talk more about that?

It is very interesting in my opinion that your you want to be a music teacher, and I admire that. I think that work would be very rewarding and enjoyable . Unfortunately , I do not know how to play any instrument besides a handful of guitar chords and I am no good at singing. But listening to music is one of my favorite things to do . I do it everyday multiple times a day and think finding a new song you like is the best feeling. I always wanted to learn to play guitar, but never seem to have time. Do you ever think about learning an instrument in addition to your singing.
To answer your other questions, my favorite sport is ice hockey which i talked alot about in my first post. It is a very fun and unique game that I wish was more popular in all areas of the world. My dreams for the future are to make money doing something i enjoy, find a girl, and have a family. And some nice cars.

My name is Patricia Alfonzo, I’m 15 years old, I’m living in Comitan, Mexico but I used to live in the capital of “Chiapas”, Tuxtla, I lived there for 14 year. At first it was hard for me to leave Tuxtla but now I call Comitan my home.
I have 1 brother and 2 sisters. I don’t have any pets. I’m in first semester of high school in ITAES, I’m learning two different languages: English, I have been learning English since 2005 & Frech,I have been learning French since 2012.
I really like to dance & I love the music.
As for travelling , I have only traveled insided the country for example: Cancun, Playas del Carmen, Tulúm, Huatulco, Durango, Yucatán and Distrito Federal or Mexico City. All those places are beautiful and amazing but I still want to travel to others countries, one of those countries is the US.
I hope that one day soon I can visit you guys but until than it’s nice to now about you

My name is Kate, and I am 17 years old. I live in Darien, Connecticut in the United States, but I was born in Palo Alto, California. I have a twin brother named Matt, and I have two dogs named Gordie and Carnie. I am currently in my last year of high school and I am getting ready to go to college next year. It is a very stressful year, but I am excited as well.
I really like to dance as well. I have been doing ballet since I was three years old. I have classes six days a week, and I am currently rehearsing for The Nutcracker as well. I rehearse on the weekends, sometimes for up to six hours because I have the lead role. It is a lot of hard work, but I love it and I am very excited for the performance in December.
As for traveling, I don’t travel a lot outside of the United States. I have been to many of the states, but the only other country I have been to is Canada. I really want to travel to other countries and see the world. I would especially love to go to France, Italy, Spain, and Australia. Hopefully I will visit these countries some day, and I hope you get the chance to visit the United States!

Hola estimado Profesor Jonathan y alumnos del Período 8!
Soy Cristina, la profesora de Artes del Instituto Nuestra Señora de Lourdes y quería felicitarlos y agradecerles la conexión que logramos hoy. Es fantástico si uno pudiera realizar estas clases en directo, donde el aprendizaje e intercambio intercultural es tan rico.
Mis alumnos están muy contentos y motivados con este intercambio, ellos son de 6to año y tercer año del turno tarde, pero también tenemos algunos jóvenes del turno mañana que solicitaron participar.
Su español es muy bueno y logramos comprendernos, los chicos estaban contentos que les preguntaran del rally, porque realmente es un evento que se disfruta mucho aquí en Córdoba.
También estaban los jovencitos de 3° año, contentos de conocer a quienes enviarán sus tarjetas de saludos.
Esperamos felices de poder lograr otra videoconferencia como esta.
