November 5th, 2009, at 7:00 p.m. in the MMS Auditorium, VARIETY SHOW 3 opens…to strengthen the BRIDGE TO DARIÉN
In 2008, students at Middlesex Middle School, in Darien, Connecticut, undertook the project of building a permanent virtual bridge between their community and the remote, rural province of Darién, Panamá, where their town found its present name over 200 years ago. They discovered that Darién is Panamá´s largest and least-populated province, situated in the heart of the Central American rainforest, on the isthmus which connects North and South America. They also learned that resources are not abundant and that, in order to blog and videoconference with students in the «original» Darién, they would need to stretch a helping hand across the miles to enable the required technology to exist and function.
Middlesex Principal Dr. Boccanfuso recommended that the school sponsor a school in Darién. Working through Panamá´s top-rated non-profit organization, La Fundación Pro-Niños de Darién, MMS students formed Darien a Darién to build a virtual bridge of friendship between the two places with different names, and staged two variety shows to raise funds for the building of a computer lab filled with laptops specifically designed for use in the high heat and humidity of the rainforest. Through the students’ diligence and generous donations from parents, this dream materialized in 2009. Nicanor School, in Darién, now has a computer lab of its own.

Nicanor’s classrooms were remodeled after Variety Show 2, and we are told by our friends at the Fundación Pro-Niños that Nicanor is now the only school in the province which has tiled floors throughout the building. They also have remodeled indoor and outdoor kitchens, and likewise a refurbished dining hall. Children at the school grow their own nutritious lunches in the school’s garden and orchard.
The children show a visiting MMS teacher their orchard and garden. Since the second variety show, they now have a new poultry facility and lots of chickens which they are presently raising.
The Panamanian government has a project which they call Conéctate al Conocimiento. In English, this means «Get Connected to Knowledge.» Because of the Middlesex Darien to Dariénproject, the government has pledged to connect Nicanor School to the Internet and to maintain that service. If all goes well, students in the two Dariens will be videoconferencing and blogging — exchanging ideas, viewpoints, and learning — before the year is out.
Seeking to build a playground for Nicanor School — and perhaps a fence to surround the site, which is now viewed as a replicable model for other educational institutions in the region — students at MMS are presenting Variety Show 3on the 5th of November, at 8:00. All reserved seats are $10, and tickets are available now. The bridge to Darién is being strengthened, along with the friendship enjoyed by students on both sides.

Los estudiantes de Middlesex Middle School esperan poder empezar este año con videoconferencias y otras comunicaciones con sus nuevos amigos de la escuela Nicanor. Como ya saben todos, el pueblo de Darien, en el estado de Connecticut (Estados Unidos), tomó su nombre de Darién, Panamá, hace unos 200 años. Ya estamos construyendo un puente virtual entre los dos Darienes, brindando una amistad sincera. Con el tercer espectáculo, estaremos ofreciendo apoyo y, a la vez, celebrando el éxito que ha tenido este proyecto estudiantil. Este año, si Dios quiere, tendremos la oportunidad de empezar un intercambio de ideas y cultura, con correo electrónico, teleconferencias, y mucho más.
¡Qué siga para siempre el proyecto Darien a Dariény los lazos bien fuertes que existen entre los dos Darienes!

at all of the rehersals and auditions so far there has been an AMAZING amount of talent! I did not know what amazing commitment it takes to put on a show but I face it straight on as all of my peers do. If you are going to the show you will be amazed with what amazing talent stirs inside the people that you walk with in the hall. AMAZING!!!!
¡En todos los ensayos y audiciones que han habido hasta ahora,he visto una cantidad ASOMBROSA de talento! Yo no sabía lo que había que hacer para tener un espectáculo de este tipo, pero me emocioné mucho al ver todo lo que mis iguales hacen. Si usted va a una presentación como ésta, se quedará asombrado con el nivel de de talento que existe dentro de los compañeros de clase. ¡Increíble!

My favorite variety show act was when Jacob and Ben Ruqoi did there bo jitsu routine, and i liked it because i have seen my friend do it with them in the class that they take together, and it looks like you have to have amazing handwork to be as good as those brothers. The variety show 3 was amazing!
That was an amazing show that turned out to be the most fun moment of my life. It felt amazing getting up onto stage and putting all I had into my piano playing. Because we had to wait in the band room during the rest of the acts, I did not see any, but I would have to say (because it was amazingly fun) my favorite was my own act. In the rehearsals, my favorite act was the fabulous young Monet (sorry if I spelled the name wrong). As her hands flew across the violin, it was unbelievable the amount of talent that lurks within that girl, witch some of us sit in class with. The show was exelent!
Eso fue una exposición asombrosa que resultó ser el momento más divertido de mi vida. Me encantó la oportunidad de tocar el piano parabrindar amistad a nuestros amigos allá en Darién. Porque tuvimos que esperar en el cuarto de la banda durante el resto de los actos, yo no vi el espectáculo personalmente, pero tendría que decir (porque fue asombrosamente divertido) que mi favorito fue mi propio acto. En los ensayos, mi acto predilecto fue la joven y fabulosa Monet (perdón si deletreé mal su nombre). Cuando las manos volaron a través del violín, fue increíble la cantidad de talento que posee esa niña, la bruja con quien algunos de nosotros nos sentamos en la clase. ¡La exposición fue exelente!

Variety Show Three was phenomenal! It had everything that could possibly come to mind! I absolutely loved it and plan on seeing Variety Show…4? If there is one! I really did enjoy it especially when Mr. Smith sung. The intermission was a life saver! I got to speak with my friends and keeping quiet for a long time is not my best quality. Haha! I loved the Irish Step Dancing and the boy breaking the cement blocks in half. One thing I really loved was walking in to the variety show. I was greeted by Mrs. Preshko and Mrs. Bird was the one who took my ticket. I wanted to see the look on my face as the bright lights scattered across the stage. Sitting down and watching the singer’s present the show was amazing. I loved it!

I thought the variety show was great, but my favorite act was the modern dancer that was towards the end of the show. I liked her because she was very crisp, clean, and professional. She had very nice pirouette turns. She also had nice pointy feet! Those are some reasons why I liked her.

My favorite performer in the Variety Show 3 was the last 2 singers! I liked them because I thought they had a lot of talent. I also like them because of their song choice! There are many more reasons why I liked them. The other performers were awesome too, but I liked the last 2 singers the best!!!

En estos momentos me encuentro con los niños de la Escuela de Nicanor Darien (Panamà, los cuales estan muy contentos de escribirles y deseosos de verle una vez mas; los proyectos ejecutados en esta escuela estan siendo muy bien manejados por los padres, dosentes y estudiantes.

Nuestros amigos del Cuerpo de Paz podrán ayudarnos, espero, y muy pronto estaremos escribiendo todo el tiempo en este blog. Me encantó la visita con ustedes. Quiero regresar con algunos de nuestros niños uno de estos días, y nuestra directora también tiene deseos de conocer el Darién original. ¡Tuvimos una visita muy emocionante! Es para mi una gran alegría observar por medio de este espacio la escuela que me vio formarme como un gran docente. Soy el maestro Jesús Almanza. Laboré 3 años en la escuela de Nicanor y volverla a ver como está en estas fotos se me salen las lágrimas. ¡Qué bien por el pueblo… los muchachos que cuentan con unas instalaciones apropiadas para su superación! Los felicito de todo corazón, ya que esta escuela es la primera escuela donde empecé a laborar como docente. Mis respetos a la profesora Fulvia por el amor que siempre ha demostrado a su comunidad. Extraño mi escuela de Nicanor y daria mucho por volverla a ver. Gracias a todos los que han hecho posible que mi escuelita luzca esplendida. Muchas gracias.
